The Journal of College Admission was established in 1956 and is published quarterly by the National Association for College Admission Counseling. My work on the journal began with redesigning the template to give it a contemporary look and feel which still aligned with the association’s visual branding. The font family was changed from Baskerville to FS me, a modern san-serif font designed for maximum legibility, and which was already being used on other branded material. I used the simple triangle motif, which was also part of their branding, with color codes to visually distinguish each section.
Every issue has three feature stories of which I pick one to use as the cover story. The most exciting part of the design process for me is brainstorming for a concept that brings the story to life and really conveys the content in one powerful image. I continue to reinforce the chosen concept within the layout of the entire story by marrying text and image, enhancing the visual experience throughout the reader’s journey. I use a combination of stock photography and illustration as well as some of my illustration. Below are some of my favorite spreads.
